Rafael López Aliaga announces legal actions against the president of the JNE over resolution on municipal credentials

The leader of Renovación Popular, Rafael López Aliaga, announced that he will file criminal and constitutional complaints against the president of the National Jury of Elections (JNE), Roberto Burneo. The announcement comes a day after the electoral body determined that incumbent mayors who ran as first councilors will not receive mayoral credentials for the 2027-2030 period.

During a public event held in Carabayllo, López Aliaga described the JNE's decision as a violation of the Constitution and the current succession law. He argued that the electoral body exceeds its functions by modifying normative criteria regarding the proclamation of authorities.

Meanwhile, Yessica Clavijo, general secretary of the JNE, explained that the measure is part of the initial review of 427 proclamation cases corresponding to the 2026 Regional and Municipal Elections. Clavijo reiterated that the status of first councilor does not entitle one to assume the mayoralty in these scenarios.

The JNE recalled that its decisions are issued in the final instance and are not subject to appeal through administrative electoral channels, while the affected political sector evaluates the corresponding legal remedies.
