Democratic Alliance initiates coalition talks following elections in Nelson Mandela Bay
“DA goes on coalition offensive as battle for Nelson Mandela Bay begins”
Forensic Headline Assessment: Warlike and hyperbolic language ('offensive', 'battle') is removed to accurately reflect a democratic and administrative process.
After failing to achieve an absolute majority in the municipal elections, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has formally begun coalition negotiations in the municipality of Nelson Mandela Bay. The party won 53 of the 120 council seats, requiring additional agreements to form a stable government.
The DA consolidated its position as the majority force in the metro after securing 44.17% of the vote in the elections. To reach the majority of 61 seats required to govern, the party needs to add at least eight additional councillors through pacts with other political forces.
Representatives of the DA have confirmed contacts with formations such as Freedom Front Plus, ActionSA, and the UDM. However, talks with the latter were temporarily suspended following the murder of UDM councillor Luxolo Namette, which occurred over the weekend in Gqeberha.
Meanwhile, the African National Congress (ANC), which obtained 32 seats after a drop in its electoral support, maintains the theoretical option of putting together an alternative coalition that excludes the DA. Local authorities and newly entering parties seek to overcome administrative instability to prioritize the recovery of basic services such as water and electricity.
